Why are big cats so interesting and important?
Either you have a love for wild cats or you don't, but here are some of the reasons people of all ages, and from all different backgrounds, love the great felines:
- They look cool—what’s not to love about those piercing eyes, thick whiskers, luxuriant coats, velvety paws and powerful jaws?
- Wild cats include the largest, fastest and most agile carnivores alive today
- They are the masters of hunting and killing—top of the food chain (apart from humans)
- With at least 36 species and many more extinct varieties, cats are the most diverse and numerous carnivores, able to adapt to some of Earth’s most extreme environments
- Cats have captivated the imaginations of humankind for thousands of years, featuring in the many of the oldest archaeological finds, indicating that our history is very much entwined with theirs. Today, wild cats are a feature in countless books, movies and video games, bringing their power and majesty to a whole new generation.
Apart from their emotional appeal, big cats also fulfill an important function in the wild: keeping prey populations in check. By preventing over-population in any given area, wild cats reduce the devastation to vegetation caused by too many animals foraging, a problem that would affect not just that prey species, but others who feed on those plants as well. Hunting also contributes to natural selection of prey because the old, sick and weak often fall victum to predators before healthy animals do. This contributes to maintaining a good balance in the wild.
