Wild Cats in 10,000 BC

Spear Tooth

Cats in The Jungle BookThe spear tooth is the best-looking saber-toothed tiger I’ve seen in a movie. Not only are the graphics so fantastic it seems real, but the spear-tooth even plays a mystical David in the Lion’s Den type of role. When main character DLeh, played by Steven Strait, falls into a deep pit filled with thick, wooden spikes, he is confronted by a trapped saber-tooth that is drowning. After saving it, the big cat leaps to safety. It later follows DLeh into a village and faces him without harming him in front of the astounded natives. Conveniently, they have a prophecy where a saber-tooth would stand over a man, but not attack him, and this man is destined to be the saviour of the natives from the area. Sadly, but understandably from a plot point of view, that’s the last we see of the spear tooth.

Viewing recommendation

Rated M in Australia, 10,000 BC is a curious mixture of fantasy, sci-fi and history with many fight scenes and chases that could be frightening to children. Not only are the main characters harried by enormous prehistoric beasts, but they are also attacked by horse-back raiders seeking slaves and engage in hand-to-hand combat with bone and wooden staves.
